About Maryland

Maryland, often referred to as the “Old Line State” and the “Free State,” is a diverse and historically rich state located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Known for its blend of urban sophistication, picturesque Chesapeake Bay, and historic significance, Maryland offers a wide range of experiences for residents and visitors alike.

Maryland played a pivotal role in American history, from the signing of the Declaration of Independence to the Civil War. The state is home to historic sites such as Fort McHenry, where the Star-Spangled Banner was written, and Antietam National Battlefield, the site of a critical Civil War battle.

Crimes Overview

Maryland experiences higher crime rates in certain categories compared to the national averages. The state has significantly higher rates of murder, assault, robbery, and a higher rate of rape. However, Maryland has lower rates of kidnapping, burglary, arson, vandalism, blackmail, and theft. Motor vehicle theft is also lower in the state. Maryland does face a higher rate of identity theft. Drug offenses are not a significant concern, but weapon law violations are being closely monitored and have a lower rate compared to the national average.
